EAT & DRINK IN THESSALONIKI
From bakeries, bars, restaurants, and coffee shops-Thessaloniki’s food scene makes it a year-round destination.
CHAROUPI
The carob, a flowering shrub very popular in the Mediterranean, has a heavy influence in this restaurant’s menu. And for a good reason–Chef Manolis Papoutsakis has created a menu firmly rooted in traditional Cretan cuisine, with dishes that have been created with modern flavors.
Avli Tip: Try the handmade carob “meat pie” with ravioli and egg-lemon cream. The carob, flowering shrub popular in the Mediterranean, is the restaurant’s inspiration.
MAMALOUKA
Mamalouka believes in fresh ingredients and simple dishes. The warm atmosphere, relaxing music, and delicious dishes are perfect for a spontaneous date night, where you don’t need a reservation.
Avli Tip: Add to the date with a stop in the Thessaloniki Photography Museum, only a couple minutes down the street.
THESS BAO
Bao buns, burgers, and bougatsa. Thess Bao is pushing street food boundaries and will put anything–whether it’s Chicken curry, Bavaria sausage, Falafel, or Beijing Duck–in a bao bun.
Avli Tip: Don’t skip the Bao Bougatsa dessert: a fried bao with bougatsa cream, cinnamon foam, and powdered sugar.
TERKENLIS
Founded in 1948, Terkenlis is one of the most iconic Greek pastry makers in Greece. They prepare a variety of treats including cakes, traditional pies, and ice cream–but they’re most famous for their Greek Tsourseki.
Avli Tip: Although there are several locations, visit the brand’s oldest shop located at the corner of Tsimiski and Aristotelous Street in the heart of the Aristotelous square.
BOUGATSA BANTIS
Bougatsa, a beloved pastry consumed in Greece typically for a quick breakfast or afternoon snack, originated in Thessaloniki. Bantis Bougatsa, owned by a father and son duo, is a must visit if you’re spending a few days in Thessaloniki.
Avli Tip: Start your day here, the line in the afternoon can get long. Pair a bougatsa with their strong coffee.
PSARAS
Ideal if you’re staying in an AirBnB with a kitchen, it’s the best spot in town to get quality fish. Since 1928, the Papadopoulou family has been dedicated to sending small boats out to sea everyday, to bring customers the freshest fish to cook at home.
Avli Tip: For an additional €3, the fish is cleaned, baked and ready to be enjoyed at home in any corner of Thessaloniki.
ON THE ROAD
It might not be the prettiest bar on the block, but it is definitely one of the best. Since 1995, they’ve been recommending drinks based on your personality and serving up a good time.
Avli Tip: Spend the day exploring Thermaikos by the water, one of the most popular destinations in Thessaloniki.
